What are Knitted Knockers

A Knitted Knocker is a prosthesis for breast cancer survivors who have had a mastectomy or lumpectomy.

Knitted Knockers are soft, comfortable, and safe to wear because they are made using only natural materials. They are light weight, look and feel real, and can be worn in a regular bra. Silicone prosthetics are heavier and usually require a special bra with pockets to keep them in place. They are also expensive and without medical aid many breast cancer survivors can’t afford them. Knitted Knockers, on the other hand, are accessible to everyone!

Volunteer knitters and crocheters hand craft Knitted Knockers from the CANSA approved Knitted Knockers South Africa kits. They are gifted, FREE of charge, to women who have undergone mastectomy/lumpectomy surgery, as an alternative product to the silicon prosthesis. We also offer Knitted Knockers to women who are awaiting implants, have had their implants removed or are undergoing radiation treatment.

A lot of thought and care has gone into the design of our Knitted Knockers.

  • They have a concave back, to ensure that as little fabric as possible touches sensitive scars.
  • There is a “buttonhole” that facilitates the removal and insertion of the stuffing, which makes washing and drying much easier.
  • The round shape fits into an ordinary bra easily without having to be adjusted. (No special bra needed)
  • Their light weight means they are comfortable to wear all day.
  • We have matched sizes to fit different bra sizes.
  • There are 10 different colours available.
  • They are made from the softest, pure, natural cotton that has been dyed without the use of harsh chemicals which can irritate sensitive skin and scars.
  • 100% merino wool filling breathes and so is comfortable to wear in any weather. It has been treated to prevent felting.

Thank you

A huge debt of gratitude is owed to all our volunteer makers, kit suppliers, distributors and those that support Knitted Knockers South Africa in other ways, without them, we would not exist.
